The Friendship Break-Up movie…

'Not A Good Person', written and directed by Madeline McLaughlin.

The film centers on a friendship break-up between Ben (Davis Cowart) and Blair (TBD) and its affect on their larger friend group from college. The film is broken up into five parts, with each part following a different stage of break-up.This film stars Davis Cowart, Joe Schwalb, Aaron Gonner, Trisha Pickhaupt and Marshall Jin-Su Joun. cinematography by Felix Penzarella.

What does the movie feel like? 

"It's 'The Big Chill' meets 'Frances Ha'." — Cast Member, Aaron Gonner. It's the kind of bittersweet, funny, observational hang out movie you watch with friends on a rainy day with all the Taco Bell and junk food one can buy (it's not like this generation can afford a house so why not splurge edible garbage!) and gossip about those friends that aren't always the easiest to deal with. 

How Are we making it?

In December 2023 we filmed part one of five. We are fundraising in order to make parts 2-5. be on the look out for updates on the production and ways to support the film.

Why this film?

In my writing, like many other creatives, I try to look for gaps in what stories are being told. I search for the stories I want to see. However, for this script, I did not have to search very far. Many of us have gone through friendship break-ups, but it’s not often given the emotional weight it deserves in media. Friendship break-ups can be just as, if not more, painful as romantic relationships and are worth being reflected in art in media. I’ve experienced my own friendship break-ups, as have many of the people involved with this film. They’re painful and often leave us wondering— ‘Am I bad friend? or are they the bad friend?’ ‘Am I bad person, or are they the bad person?’ ‘Can I be a bad friend, but a good person? or A Good friend, but a bad person?’ It’ll make anyone’s head spin and I thought a very complex (but not actually too complicated) subject to explore.
